Overview

The WisCorps Garden Assistants will develop and maintain the WisCorps fruit and vegetable demonstration garden and native  pollinator gardens located at headquarters (Myrick Park Center, La Crosse, WI). Our Garden Assistants learn by doing! They will research and implement a variety of urban gardening practices and create their own program to educate students and community members about sustainable and reliable food sources. No previous gardening experience required. Applicants should be self-motivated and an invested team member in the garden's success. 

Responsibilities

  • Commit to serving at least 300 hours in the fruit & veggie and native pollinator gardens before August 31

  • Design and implement at least one program to share what you've learned with members of the local community

  • Work as a member of a team to prepare, plant, water, weed, and harvest the garden

  • Positively represent WisCorps and AmeriCorps when interacting with members of the public

  • Wear proper personal protective equipment and make safety the number one priority

  • Ask for help when needed

  • Track hours served in a timesheet database and submit on time

Qualifications

  • At least 17 years of age (must complete high school diploma or equivalent before education award may be used)

  • Self-motivated, self-directed, responsible

  • Experience with teaching someone a new skill, communicating with a team, leading a group

  • Passionate about learning more about urban gardening practices 

  • Willingness to research gardening techniques and put them into practice

  • Enjoys hard work and has a good sense of humor

  • Prepared to undergo a criminal background check
